Optimize Your WordPress Website – Easy Steps
WordPress Optimization – To get high rankings in search engines like Google you have to optimize your WordPress Website efficiently.
WordPress is one of the best blogging platform. WordPress already have lot of in-built features and plugins to optimize your website. However, in order to create a successful website, you need to take some important steps to lift your blog to the next level. For better search engine rankings you must optimize your blog settings, site structure and overall site behavior.
WordPress Optimization – Introduction
Before we do optimization to your WordPress website. First we login your WordPress Admin Panel.
Now, you can login your WordPress Admin Panel like this link I’ve mentioned it below.
The below image displays where to log with with your admin username and password. See the below picture demo.
STEP:1 – General WordPress Settings
When you log in your WordPress website, first you’ll see the Dashboard in the left side of your computer screen. Scroll down your mouse and come to the settings link under that setting, you will see like below picture.
Setting>>>General Settings in the left-hand navigation bar. You click the General.
Leave first two boxes empty, don’t add anything here in this boxes. If you add anything here, then it will be appear two times when you add Title Tag and Meta Description Tags. Another thing most of the WordPress themes already have two separate fields option in their theme option itself. One is for adding Title of the Home Page and the second one is for Meta Description for the Home page. So if you add anything here. It will appear two times. It’s not looking great. So to avoid this leave the above two fields blank. (Note : If you’re going to add logo with your site-name and tag line, then leave the above two fields blank, otherwise you can fill those above two lines is my suggestion). Another important thing, always use WordPress SEO by Yoast for your WordPress Website. My first preference always WordPress SEO. You can add Title Tag and also Meta Description for your home page and also to your post pages.
Now, come to third box WordPress (URL) you can modify your WordPress URL here. If it appears like this http://2createablog.com then you can change it as http://www.2createablog.com. So you can use WWW. before the domain name so it look nice and comfortable for sharing your website. Next come to Site Address URL Here also do the same thing mentioned in the above point. This is the important step in optimizing your WordPress website.
According to Google :
http://2createablog.com and http://www.2createablog.com is totally different one.
So please remember this when you make this modification in the General settings.
There are two things you should remember while doing this. One is you’re doing for better search engine rankings in Google and another one is for showing relevant Google Ads in your website. If you chosen wrong URL then Google starts displaying irrelevant Google AdSense Ads on your website. So be careful while doing this modification.
In the membership box you just tick Anyone can Register.
New users default role always be : Subscriber . Don’t set anything apart from this. You can also set date and time and also starts day with Monday.
So, now we successfully completed the General Settings in WordPress.
I personally recommend use WordPress SEO Plugin by Yoast for your WordPress website.
STEP:2 – What is Permalink? How to Use It
Now we move on to the second step of optimizing your WordPress website, that is Permalinks.
Permalink is a URL Structure that points towards a particular post or particular page or to a particular forum. Permalink passes from Home Page (Index Page) to Archives Page. Once you set-up the permalink for your website. It will never change there after. So be cautious in your approach while setting up permalink for your website. Permalink is the most common term use in blogosphere.
In common all hyperlinks or otherwise called it as “Permalinks“. See the below picture for How to User Permalinks more effectively.
First you see the above picture carefully. First one is default, it’s not looking great. Come to the second one with day and time, this also not looking good. Third one is month and name, say no to this. Fourth one is numeric it is good for your forum not good for your website. Fifth one is Post Name. Here you take some time to decide. I explain now how to choose best permalink structure for your website. There are three options here.
- Post Name : http://www.way2onlinejobs.com/Sample-post/
- Custom Structure 1 : http://www.way2onlinejobs.com/%Category%/%Sample-Post%
- Custom Structure 2 : http://www.way2onlinejobs.com/%Category%/%Sample-Post%.html
Most of the bloggers in blogosphere using the first one in the above list. It’s looking good. But I strongly recommend my website readers to use the third one in the above list. Which is SEO Friendly URL structure and the important thing you can add exact category to the post belongs too. So Google give more importance to your blog posts while you adding Category in the URL Structure of your WordPress website.
Now we move on to final section of WordPress Optimizing, that is Setting Up Categories.
STEP:3-Setting Up Categories
This is the final step of optimizing your WordPress website. Now we’re going to setting up categories for your website. First of all, my advice is first decide your Niche. Then read all the articles related to your niche which are already available on Internet. Visit at-least 200 to 300 websites related to your niche. Then you’ll understand what to do with your website, it gives a complete picture what are all categories they’re using in their websites. So write down those categories in a piece of paper. So that you can use it for your website. Don’t create too many categories. Create only important categories which will enhance your site performance. Another important thing don’t create categories more than 10 at maximum. Be remember your categories always act as keyword for your post. So create category with exact meaning for the post. Read dictionary before creating categories, so that you can select best one word or two word category. Categories play a crucial role in search engine rankings especially with Google and Yahoo. Both of them giving more importance to categories. Most of my fellow bloggers don’t know the importance of categories in search engine rankings. Because of that they’re using the first URL Structure in the above list in Permalink section. My suggestion for them if they start using the third one then there results will be much better than normal one.
For example: let’s assume that you own a web designing tutorial website like mine. If you plan to create a web designing tutorial website then you must have the following categories.
- Build (it means Building Your Website)
- Prebuild (it means Before Build Your Website)
- Income or Money (Monetizing your website)
- RSS (RSS Feeds Tutorial Posts to be listed here)
- SEO (Search Engine Optimization)
- Social (Social Media)
- Software (Web Designing Software Posts to be listed here under this category)
- Spam (Spam Content / Spam Comments and so on to be listed here under this category)
- Web Design (All post related to web designing tutorials listed here)
- HTML (All HTML posts to be listed here under this category)
Note: Creating more categories is not advisable. You can use Tags to compensate categories. Tags can be more useful for any post(s). So you can use Simple Tags Plugin for creating Tags. See the below picture of creating categories.
Whenever you draft a new post, first tick the appropriate category box below the Text editor box in the right-hand side below. thereby making it easy for your site readers to discover your content.
In the left-hand navigation bar. You’ll find categories under the posts menu
Posts>>Categories>>Add New Category
In the first box, give category name. Here you can give the category name in Capital Letters or Normal Letters. Say for Example ADSENSE can be written as AdSense.
(The name is how it appears on your site.)
In the second box, The “slug” is the URL-friendly version of the name. It is usually all lowercase and contains only letters, numbers, and hyphens.
You can also use Parent Category. (if required)
Now, come to important stage, Whether description is necessary for category? My answer is Yes. You can write at-least 170 words description for your category. (like adding Meta Description to your Posts). Description also one of the important factors in search engine rankings. When you’re using breadcrumb to your blog posts (description play a vital role in that) Google easily identify your post with the help of descriptions (both Meta Description and also Category Description). So write exact description which matches your category.
AWESOME! You’re optimizing like a Pro-blogger now, and there’s nothing stopping you in creating a successful website. You’re just few steps away from creating your first blog post. Be ready for the next post on WordPress Tutorial.
